Hats off to the poppy. It always makes me so sad to harvest my herbs – just when they look so gorgeous. However since they are such magnificent healers, I think they understand. I love Californian Poppy (Eschscholzia californica). It is one of my favourites for pain relief, especially migraines; also for anxiety and difficulty sleeping. Whilst Valerian is one of the most popular herbs in my dispensary, some people don’t get on with it, and then my next go-to herb is Californian poppy.
It quietens an over stimulated nervous system – and guess what – these days almost everybody is over stimulated. By quietening our over excited brain-waves, it allows for a peaceful sleep.
I love to combine poppy with Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) for those suffering from headaches or migraines, or also menstrual cramps.
Anxiety is so very prevalent these days, and Poppy combines beautifully with Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) which you can easily grow in your garden, or Motherwort for those with palpitations, or Vervain – all easily grown in your garden. Isn’t Nature just AMAZING?
It can also be used with Chamomile, peppermint, and/or Lemon balm for IBS type symptoms when they are caused by anxiety.
Do give this dear little flower a smile and stroke its silky petals next time you meet.
